Techniques for Creating Dance Compositions

I’ve been a dancer for over twenty years, and I’m going to share some of my personal techniques for creating dance compositions. It’s really important to consider how the composition will be performed when you’re planning your choreography to appropriate terms of time, space, and music. For example, one technique often used in modern dance is projecting an image onto a screen behind the performer while dancing on stage. This can add another layer of meaning by referencing something outside the performance or simply adding visual interest.

Exploring dance composition

There are many steps to take to create a good composition that is pleasing and engaging for the dancer. For example, one step would be to consider what type of movement you want your dancers performing. The type of movement can vary from fast-paced movements like jazz or hip hop dances where there is not much time between moves to slower flowing movements like ballet or belly dancing where each move has more time between them before moving on to the next.  Another step would be considering what mood you want your audience to feel. This could include sad music with slow, fluid movements or happy music with fast-paced movements so that your audience leaves feeling uplifted and energized.

Choose a Theme  If you’re not sure what theme to choose for your piece, try brainstorming different ideas and picking the one that excites you the most. For example, if it’s summertime, think about everything associated with summer, like sunshine and ice cream! What is your favorite season? What does it remind you of? This will give you an idea of what kind of mood should be present in your dance composition.
